Therapeutic Ultrasound After Liposuction

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound

We’ve all heard of ultrasound being used for monitoring pregnancies and otherwise offering a non-invasive look inside the body. But did you know that ultrasound technology also offers a fast, comfortable way of revitalizing your appearance?

High-intensity ultrasound uses targeted sound waves to tighten lax tissue and stimulate fresh collagen production, helping to restore your natural firmness and sculpt defined contours. The whole process can be done without surgery or incisions, and requires little if any downtime.

What Is High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound?

As we age, natural collagen production slows and the underlying structural matrix of the skin relaxes. This leads to a loss of skin elasticity along with a subtle sagging of the skin in several areas of the body, including the neck, mid-face, and along the jawline.

High-intensity ultrasound is an advanced, non-invasive treatment designed to reverse these early signs of aging. By bypassing the outer layers of the skin, it delivers focused acoustic heat into deep tissue layers to lift, firm, and refine your contours naturally for long-lasting results. In addition, high-intensity focused ultrasound is a useful way to address persistent localized fat or firm up loose skin after a liposuction procedure.

How It Works

High-intensity ultrasound operates much like a magnifying glass focusing sunlight. Just as focusing light rays creates a point of intense energy, focusing ultrasound waves on a single spot allows for a targeted delivery of thermal energy.

Sound waves are focused at pre-selected depths of 3.0 to 4.5 mm below the surface of the skin. This allows ultrasound waves to pass harmlessly through the surface of the skin to reach key structural zones in the subdermal layers, such as the dermis, fibrous tissue, and SMAS layer (the same layer tightened during a surgical facelift).

The thermal energy causes microscopic tears in these areas, which serve as coagulation points. The body responds by immediately contracting its existing collagen fibers while triggering the body’s natural wound-healing process. Over the following weeks and months, the skin tissue will continuously generate new collagen and elastin, causing a gradual tightening of the skin and adjustment to the appearance of the targeted area.

In addition to restoring skin appearance, high-intensity ultrasound can be used to disrupt subcutaneous fat cells. The body’s lymphatic system then naturally processes and flushes away these cells over time.

What to Expect During Your Session

A high-intensity ultrasound session begins with a consultation and body mapping session, where we examine a patient’s skin laxity and mark target zones to ensure precise, even coverage. Prior to the treatment, a conductive cooling gel is applied to allow smooth acoustic wave delivery.

Patients often report a warm, prickling sensation as the sound waves reach the deep tissue. Once the treatment is finished, we remove the gel and apply a soothing moisturizer and broad-spectrum sunscreen. Treatment sessions typically take just 15 to 30 minutes.

What Can High-Intensity Ultrasound Treat?

High-intensity ultrasound focuses on two main aesthetic concerns: skin laxity and stubborn subcutaneous fat.

Common treatment areas include:

Facial & Neck Tightening

  • Defining soft edges along the jawline and reducing jowl overhang
  • Smoothing vertical folds (“turkey neck”) and firming sagging skin under the chin
  • Lifting lax tissue along the cheeks and mid-face region to restore natural volume and soften smile lines
  • Lifting heavy brows, opening up the eye area, and smoothing fine periorbital lines.

Body Contouring and Localized Fat Reduction

  • Contracting loose skin along the thighs or upper arms for a more toned appearance
  • Smoothing bulges along the mid-back and bra line
  • Firming up loose skin after a liposuction or other fat removal procedure
  • Reducing stubborn “love handles” around the abdomen and tightening the waistline
  • Refining the appearance of crepey skin, chest or decolletage lines, or enlarged pores

Benefits of High-Intensity Ultrasound

High-intensity ultrasound is completely non-invasive and comfortable, with most patients reporting little or no discomfort. Patients can also return immediately to their usual activities, with no required downtime.

By relying on the body’s natural collagen-producing or lymphatic processes, the aesthetic results are progressive and natural-looking. Patients also enjoy long-lasting results of 12 to 18 months, making high-intensity ultrasound an efficient, low-maintenance option.

In addition, high-intensity ultrasound can be seamlessly combined with broader rejuvenation plans. The procedure is often incorporated alongside dermal fillers, wrinkle relaxers, or skin resurfacing treatments.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Because high-intensity ultrasound is non-surgical, preparing for your visit is simple. Preparation focuses on minimizing skin sensitivity and ensuring an optimal collagen-building response.

To avoid complications with the treatment, patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure or tanning beds for at least one week. They should also discontinue the use of products that can increase skin sensitivity at least three days before the session, and (with clearance from a medical provider) pause the use of blood-thinning supplements to minimize potential bruising.

If the treatment will be taking place around the mouth and the patient has a history of cold sores, we advise the use of a preventative antiviral a day or two beforehand. This helps ensure that the procedure will not cause heat-triggered outbreaks.

What to Expect After Treatment

Immediate Sensations & Recovery

Patients typically experience mild symptoms immediately after high-intensity ultrasound, including light erythema (a rosy flush), a persistent sensation of warmth or tingling, minor swelling, localized tenderness along bony areas like the jawline, or mild numbness. These symptoms will resolve on their own, often within a few hours.

After high-intensity ultrasound, patients should safeguard fresh tissue by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, avoiding excessive heat, and using gentle skin care products rather than harsh scrubs or exfoliants.
